PM chairs meeting of the National Committee for Commemoration of 125th Birth Anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehrz
 PM: Celebrations should be conducted in such a way that the common man becomes a part of them
The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today chaired a meeting of the National Committee for Commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the entire set of activities would be conducted in such a way that the common man became

a part of the celebrations. The Prime Minister said this opportunity must be used to increase awareness about "Chacha Nehru" among the younger generation, and seek inspiration from his life and work. He called upon the committee members to work towards a clear delineation of the events and programmes.

The Prime Minister highlighted the proposed "Bal Swachhta Mission" to be organized in schools across the country between 14th and 19th November and proposal to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Shri Nehru as "Year of Bal Swachhta." He also said "promotion of scientific temper among children" would be a prominent objective of the celebrations. The Prime Minister invited suggestions on these and any other related subjects.




               LT Gen BK Chopra Takes Over As DGAFMS
Lt Gen BK Chopra, Senior Colonel Commandant of Army Medical Corps assumed the appointment of Director General Armed Forces Medical Services here today.

Lt Gen Chopra is a graduate of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College Kanpur and did his post-graduation in Surgery and Orthopaedics. He was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps in 1977 and has held various regimental, clinical and staff appointments during last 37 years in the armed forces. The General Officer has been appointed as President’s Honorary Surgeon by the President of India.

The General Officer has taken over the reins of Director General Armed Forces Medical Services from Air Marshal D P Joshi, who superannuated on 31 Oct 2014.

 

                                                Shilpotsav 2014 begins Shilpostav 2014, the annual fair of artisans from across the country, belonging to the weaker sections of the society, began at Dilli Haat in New Delhi today. Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Shri Sudhir Bhargava inaugurated the ten days long festival which will continue till 10th of this month.

Speaking on the occasion the Secretary said that for progress of any section of society they should be financially independent. The Ministry of SJE is working towards empowering marginalized and disadvantaged artisans and in continuance of this Shilpostav 2014 has been organized. 







 


  Bangalore becomes 'Bengaluru'; 11 other cities renamed
i. Shedding the colonial name, Bangalore today became Bengaluru synchronising with the state formation day "Karnataka Rajyotsava".
ii. In tandem, 11 other cities across Karnataka were also rechristened by the state government, casting away the anglicised names.

iii. Now Bangalore will be called Bengaluru, Mangalore (Mangaluru), Mysore (Mysuru), Bellary (Ballari), Belgaum (Belagavi), Hubli (Hubballi), Tumkur (Tumakuru), Bijapur (Vijayapura), Chikmagalur (Chikkamagaluru), Gulbarga (Kalaburagi), Hospet (Hosapete) and Shimoga (Shivamogga).


  India re-elected to UN Economic and Social Council
i. India has overwhelmingly won its re-election to the UN body on economic and social issues, garnering the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group.
ii. The 193-member UN General Assembly elected 18 members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to serve a three-year term beginning January 1, 2015.
iii. India's term at ECOSOC was scheduled to end this year and it was re-elected after getting 183 votes, the highest in the Asia Pacific group, followed by Japan and Pakistan with 181 votes each.
iv. The other 17 members to be elected to ECOSOC apart from India were Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, Japan, Mauritania, Pakistan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

  Restriction of 5 times usage of ATM 
i. Using ATMs (automated teller machines) to withdraw money or for other purposes such as balance enquiry beyond five times in a month will attract a levy of Rs.20 a transaction from Saturday.
ii.  bank customers in six metros —Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore — are allowed to withdraw money and/or carry out non-financial transactions like mini-statements at ATMs of banks, where they hold saving/current accounts, free of charge only five times a month.
iii. The RBI, however, clarified that nothing precludes a bank from offering more than three free transactions at other bank ATMs to its account holders if it so desires.

  Blackout hits Bangladesh as line from India fails
i. Bangladesh was hit by a nationwide blackout on Saturday after a transmission line bringing electricity from neighbouring India failed, but power was restored to many parts of the country within a few hours.
ii. Bangladesh began importing electricity from India in October 2013 through a 400-kilovolt transmission line that runs from Baharampur in the Indian state of West Bengal to the town of Bheramara in southwestern Bangladesh.
